We had a great time presenting at SECA (Southern Early Childhood Conference) today in Savannah, Georgia.

D.C. Here We Come!

Just in case you forgot, we’re presenting at naeyc this year: 2009 Annual Conference & Expo in Washington, D.C.

And, I (SerahRose) have to admit that although I’m really excited to share PictureBook Plays with new folks, I think I may be more excited to bring my daughter along for some sight-seeing.Â I love to travel (so does Sharon so I guess it’s in the genes!) and I love having mommy/daughter time in new places.

The last time I went to D.C. was with my mom as a young girl.Â It was a mommy/daughter vacation and although I don’t remember much, I do remember loving it.Â So, this city holds fond memories for me and I hope to create some new ones with all three of us.

We fly on Tuesday!

We’ll keep you posted on the conference.Â It’s huge…20,000 people huge so there will be a lot to see, do, and report on.

PictureBook Plays Goes to Greenfield Community College

The students of ECE: Creative Experiences and I had a lovely time playing last week. We started out with some wiggly warm-ups to loosen everyone up, played some grown-up improv games to get everyone in the story-telling mind-set, played some kids improv games, and then finished up with some Plays.

Teaching at Greenfield Community College on November 20th

I will be teaching a workshop at Greenfield Community College for early childhood teachers as part of their “Creative Experiences” class.Â For many of them, it will be their first and only exposure to theatre.Â Hopefully, it will inspire them to learn more so they can include it in their curriculum.

I have been visiting this particular class for several years now because my co-author, Sharon, is the professor.Â What I’m excited about this time around, though, is that I will be taking a new approach.Â Usually, I teach the students as if I were teaching children.Â We step our way through a children’s theatre class and culminate with several versions of StoryBook Theatre.Â This time, I will spend at least half of the time “teaching teachers.” We will do improvisational and dramatic exercises designed for adults who teach children.Â They will learn how to say “yes” to a situation, how to improvise a story, and how to loosen up and play.

Although I have taught these games to adults before, this will be my first time combining adult theory with children’s theory.Â I’m very excited to see how it goes.Â Hopefully I’ll get some good pictures to share with you.

Although there is an abundance of music and dance classes for young children, it is difficult to find theatre opportunities. Please send me a note about your program or of programs you recommend and I will gladly include a link.
